Children who qualify for the Head Start Program receive a colorful backpack filled with educational supplies, toiletries, and change of clothing including socks and underwear. Members meet at the Christ Child House to assemble the items in the backpack. Included in each backpack is a fleece blanket made by volunteers from the “Blanket Brigade” who work preparing blankets all year long, either in their own homes or meeting once a month at the Christ Child House. Volunteers assist in delivering the completed backpacks to Antrim, Cheboygan, Charlevoix, Presque Isle, and Emmet County. More than 350 backpacks were delivered last year.
In the winter, these children receive hats and mittens from our organization.
The society also purchased 90 copies of the book “Pete the Cat Goes Camping” and distributed them to Head Start students in five locations in Emmet County.
The society is very grateful to the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation for its recent generous grant of $5,000 to support the work for Head Start and other projects of the Christ Child Society.
You can be a part of this rewarding program by Joining Us in the Christ Child Society of Northern Michigan or by donating for the backpacks and supplies.
